A journey northward : being a descriptive lecture on Alaska, 1896 Nov 16 / by Charles V. Kavanagh.

Manuscript lecture script, dated November 16, 1896 in San Francisco, in bound ledger. Originally accompanied a lantern-slide presentation given by Charles V. Kavanagh that described a steamboat trip he took to Alaska. The script provides a detailed record of Kavanagh's journey based on the views he photographed: his train trip from San Francisco to Port Townsend, Washington; his boarding of the steamship City of Topeka; and his voyage to Juneau, Douglas Island, Killisnoo Island, Sitka, and Muir Glacier. Kavanagh's remarks focus on natural landmarks, scenic vistas, geologic features, bodies of water, as well as people and buildings of interest photographed during his trip. He also describes the halibut fishing industry in Port Townsend; accommodations aboard the City of Topeka; impressions of Fort Wrangell, which include a history of the region, a description of the Indians who inhabit the village, and descriptions of several totem poles; a description of the Indian village near Juneau; and a history of the Kootznahoo Indians of Killisnoo Island. Several slide descriptions are devoted to Muir Glacier. Label adhered to first leaf: "C.V. Kavanagh. Lantern slides of the world." Original lecture was accompanied by 55 slides (not present).
